Earthlink and 550 Dynamic/zombied/spam IPs blocked

I recently moved a server to a new host and all mail is going through with the exception of earthlink. After some research it appears that this is a huge problem with legitimate businesses like mine. First of all, I was under the impression that if your server is being blocked that the blocker would send a message to “abuse@mydomainname.com”. That’s why I have that mail box set up anyway. Apparently earthlink doesn’t. So after running my mail server log analyzer a week after cutting over, I discovered that some of my clients have not been receiving email notifications.

What to do?

First I checked all the spam indexes that earthlink suggested to see if I was on a spam list. I’m not. Second, I verified that my server is not an open relay, Third, I verified in the logs that for some reason my server was sending email as if it were compromised, it’s not. Fourthly, I verified that a ptr was set up on the server, it is.

So I wrote blockedbyearthlink@abuse.earthlink.net with {BLOCKED - myIP} in the subject line asking to be removed from their block list. However, I have not heard back. The email just goes into what I can only guess is a black hole. I’m sure the employees at earthlink are hard working individuals and that the company really doesn’t want to block legitimate emails to their customer inboxes. However, the system they have in place is broken.

It’s hard to imagine why legitimate emails are being blocked so arbitrarily by just earthlink and not any of the hundreds of other ISPs my clients use. What gives?

Has anyone else run into this? If you have, what did you end up doing about it? I’d be willing to bet that some of you reading this have the same thing going on and you aren’t even aware of it. Check your logs and let me know.

I hope I have a resolution soon. I’ll chime in once I do.

Update: 2/8/2008

I just received a response from (associate_name)@corp.earthlink.net and here was the response:

Vincent,
That IP was removed from blocking.
The changes will take a couple of hours.
Regards,
(associate's name)
EarthLink

In the end, I’m just glad it’s cleared up but I still have no idea why the server’s IP ended up on their block list. My only advice…monitor your email log files often.

WinRar - A Nice Choice over WinZip

winrar.gif
In my last post, I talked about the troubles I’ve been having with FTP.  Several have suggested zipping the site before moving it over.  I’m in the process of doing that now.  I just wanted to mention that WinZip failed on such a large site, it sat there for well over 30 minutes chugging away and then it just said that it failed due to such the large size.

WinRar to the rescue!!! I downloaded WinRar and it archived it with no trouble.  I can’t figure out why winzip couldn’t handle it and maybe there is a way to set it up so that it does but I just expect things like this to work right out of the box.  WinRar did.

It comes with a unlimited 40 day free trial and then it’s only $29 US for a single user/computer license. The way the license reads is a bit confusing but I think for my use, the single user/computer license works.

FTPing Large Amount of Directories and Files

Frustrated

I’m a bit frustrated with FTP. I have always had a difficult time migrating large amounts of files from one server to another using FTP. As an example, I have a website which has over 60,000 files totaling 6.8 GBs and I’m trying to migrate it to a new server. Both are windows server 2003 with a nice fat connection to the Internet. Every time I’ve tried to ftp it over it breaks at various points. I’ve tried CuteFTP 8 Professional as well as FileZilla.

At this point I’m looking for something I can just set and forget. Something reliable and something that if the connect breaks, it will reconnect and continue remembering where it last left off. I would also like something I can have email me when complete if there is such a program. I’m willing to pay for this product but again, I want it to be reliable. I’m still searching for tools but in the meantime, if anyone knows of such a product and most importantly has experience with using the tool on large sites with no problems, please let me know.

ColdFusion Hosts

I have for many years used Serverbeach.com for my ColdFusion hosting solutions. This is a company that provides excellent, high bandwidth, self managed hosting solutions. You choose the server hardware and then manage it all remotely. Serverbeach.com has been a wonderful, flexible hosting solution for me and I intend to continue to use them into the foreseeable future. Now I’m entertaining the idea of moving some of my hobby sites to a managed server solution so that I can just concentrate on the more important applications on my dedicated solutions. I’ve so far narrowed the choices down to one of two. CrystalTech.com and FusionLink.com

I’m looking for CF 8 hosting. A web control panel that allows the full management of domain parking and email administration. They must also provide web-based email as well as both pop and imap connections for my clients. I think I’m just going to have to bite the bullet and pick one. I hate these sorts of decisions. I sometimes tend to have buyers remorse.

Requirements:

  • CF8
  • Control Panel
  • Multiple Parked Domains / Multiple Domain level FTP accounts
  • Email for each domain parked (if possible)
  • Web-based email along with POP and IMAP connections
  • MS SQL Server
  • Connection to SQL Server via Enterprise Manager
  • Unlimited datasources
  • At least 5GBs web-based storage.
  • Daily Backups for web and SQL Server
  • Great uptime
  • Great Support (rarely needed hopefully)

If you have experience with either of these companies or would like to recommend another, please let me know.

Once I make a decision, I’ll be posting about my experience along the way.
